A Nightmare to Remember (or Shatter the Illusion in British English localizations), is the last mission in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon and the only mission to take place in King Boo's Illusion. Luigi is taken to it immediately after defeating the Tough Possessor in "Stop the Knightmare" for the first time. It is the final fight against King Boo.
Description[]
"This is it, Luigi. It's time to stop King Boo for good and rescue your brother."
Story[]
After being separated from the last Dark Moon piece, Luigi is transported to a dark area and lands on a platform. He notices a creepy laughter as many windows open. It turns out to be King Boo, tormenting Luigi. Luigi then finds Mario's painting, though it turns out to be an illusion as King Boo finally comes face-to-face with Luigi. The king reveals his motives to Luigi (as well as calling the latter his younger self, referencing Baby Luigi). The king also remarks that he will paint the town "red". He plans to use the ghosts of Evershade Valley to take over the Mushroom Kingdom and plans to trap Luigi, Professor Elvin Gadd and the Toads into paintings just before he uses the power of the jewel on his crown to create his illusion.
Boss battle[]

Luigi vacuuming up King Boo in the boss battle.
The battle begins with King Boo slamming the ground, summoning 3 spiked balls. Luigi will need the king to slam the ground again to summon more spiked balls. As a shadow casts above the king, Luigi shines the Strobulb to distract King Boo and the spiked ball stuns the king, so Luigi can vacuum him and start depleting his HP.
Although, as Luigi vacuums him up, the king tries to escape and slams down the entire arena, titling it and placing Luigi into a mansion. Luigi needs to quickly run from the king, whilst avoiding obstacles manipulated by King Boo's power. Luigi escapes the mansion and he and the king battle again.

The second round of the battle.
This round is the same as the first one, except King Boo can use the power of his crown to transform some tiles into either sand or ice. Also, one of the spiked balls will be larger and a rock might drop too. As the king is stunned, Luigi vacuums up the king again, but King Boo escapes once more, following the same process as before; Luigi is placed into another mansion and must run away from the king.
After escaping the mansion once more, the final phase begins. King Boo will start by electrifying all but one of the tiles three times. After the third time, some of the tiles will be covered in either sand or ice, as well as spikes. Luigi waits for a spiked ball to fall on the king's crown to stun and capture him once and for all. His jewel bursts out of the Poltergust 5000.
Ending[]

The ghosts returned to their peaceful selves.
After Luigi does his victory dance, he is transported back onto the Terrace of the Treacherous Mansion. As he rushes over to Mario's painting, E. Gadd is pixelated to the Terrace and comforts Luigi, informing him to use the Dark-Light Device to free his brother. As Mario is freed, he congratulates Luigi for saving him. The five Toads appear with the Dark Moon pieces. Luigi is given one of them and helps the Toads reunite the pieces, returning the Dark Moon back to its original condition. A purple energy blast is released from the moon, returning all of the ghosts back to their former, peaceful selves. E. Gadd uses a remote to unleash the ghosts from the Ghost Container. Three Greenies, a Slammer, a Hider and the Grouchy Possessor hang out with Luigi and co. A sad Polterpup stands in front of Luigi, feeling remorseful for his past actions. Luigi says, "Come here, doggy!", cheering up the Polterpup, much to E. Gadd, Mario and the ghosts' delight. The ghosts, Luigi and co. unite for a group photo.

The principal characters lining up for the group photo.
Luigi comfortably sits in his couch in his mansion, before being startled by the Polterpup. In spite of this, the ghost pup happily lands in Luigi's lap and the two fall asleep together.
The credits then roll. Many scenes show Luigi and co. hanging out with the ghosts of Evershade Valley.
Strategies and guides[]
- When fighting King Boo in the second and third phases, try and lure him to a spiked ball or boulder that is the largest.
- During the segments where Luigi runs from King Boo,
- Always avoid the sand tiles that King Boo creates.
- Take the staircase showing red flames as those stairs are faster whilst blue are slower.
- Try and collect as much gold as possible to increase the chances of a 3-star rank. Aim for least 320G.
- When vacuuming King Boo, try to prevent him from pounding the ground again by unleashing a meter charge, and avoid the spiked balls as much as possible.
Mission Goals[]
Overall Goal[]
- King Boo has dragged you into his twisted illusion. This is the moment of truth! Defeat him and rescue Mario!
Other Goals[]
- Defeat King Boo!
Trivia[]
- Before the fight begins, King Boo says that he will take his rightful place as the supreme ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom in American English localizations. However, in British English localizations, he says he has intentions of making Luigi and his friends become his subjects.
- During Luigi and King Boo's fight, many elements from the past five mansions can be seen in the background of King Boo's Illusion, as well as in the mansion that King Boo summons. The most notable include:
- Suits of armor, drawers and rocking chairs from the Gloomy Manor. The mansion summoned by King Boo is also themed around the manor.
- Dolls, pots, and plants from the Haunted Towers.
- Gears from the Old Clockworks. King Boo also creates sand tiles from the jewel on his crown.
- Ice and snow from the Secret Mine.
- Chandeliers from the Treacherous Mansion.
- It's also worth noting that when getting a Game Over here, ghost themes from the Treacherous Mansion are reprised.
- As the credits roll after completing the mission, the credits theme reprises instruments from the Gloomy Manor, jingles from the Secret Mine and includes rearranged segments of the first and second phases during "Confront the Source."
- The maximum amount of gold that can be collected here is 340G. However, that total can be increased only by collecting gold upon capturing the Tough Possessor the first time, which can max out the amount up to 400G. However, this is only possible upon the first try, and not restarting this mission at all after King Boo transports Luigi.
Errors[]
- In some of the cutscenes of this mission, there are notable errors present.
- When King Boo charges up energy from the jewel on his crown, the purple lighting will sometimes not cast. A similar thing happens during the cutscene with the first Dark Moon piece being cleaned up, as the lighting effects will sometimes not cast.
- The blue, purple and green Toads are present with the red and yellow Toads helping Luigi restore the Dark Moon. However, they are not present when Luigi, his friends and the ghosts join for a group photo.
- When the restored ghosts happily reunite, a Greenie is missing his mouth. This Greenie will still lack its mouth when it leaves the Ghost Container. This happens in some English copies, but that Greenie does have a mouth in Japanese copies of the game.
- When a Slammer is chewing on a Greenie in the Courtyard in the Haunted Towers, the pinwheel vanes are missing.
- When the principal characters join for a group photo, the Greenie to the right is next to the Grouchy Possessor. However, in the next shot they appear in, the Greenie is behind the Grouchy Possessor.
