A Train to Catch, or E-3, is the third mission in the Treacherous Mansion of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, and the penultimate mini-boss mission. After Luigi and E. Gadd inspect the security camera image the Toads brought back, they find that the sack the Boos have been carrying around this whole time has Mario trapped in a painting, and that King Boo has been the one behind the Dark Moon's destruction. Luigi heads off to try and access the Train Exhibit. However, he gets held up when a Strong Poltergeist steals what he needs to enter.

For the gem locations, go here.

Description[]

"The Toad curators brought a security-camera image back with them. Maybe it'll give us some clues about the next Dark Moon piece."

Story[]

Luigi and E. Gadd take a look at the security image brought by the Toads. As they view the image, the painting that the Boos have been carrying all this time was revealed to be Mario, Luigiā€™s older brother. E. Gadd also states that the image was taken in the Train Exhibit. E. Gadd suspects that the Boos known where the final Dark Moon piece and that they are using the miniature train model for something. They also notice one of the Boos looks odd, as they examine it, it turns out to be King Boo, finally realizing that it was him behind all of this chaos.

The Parascope picks up a powerful signal from the Train Exhibit, so before E. Gadd sends Luigi off, he gives him a makeshift rotor to allow him to control the stairs in the Inner Courtyard.

After being pixelated into the Front Entrance, Luigi makes his way to the Inner Courtyard and installs the makeshift rotor to control the stairs. Luigi uses the Poltergust 5000 to connect the stairs to the right door. Luigi climbs the stairs and enters the East Corridor, then enters the Study. He uses the Dark-Light Device to reveal an invisible yellow book and places it into the bookcase. However, a yellow hand pushes the book out of its place. As it is the sound of a Poltergeist, one appears to have been strengthened by the crystals from the Secret Mine. The Poltergeist then steals the book and escapes. E. Gadd then calls. He states that the Parascope doesn't work well within the Treacherous Mansion, but finds a signal emitting from the west side of the mansion.

Luigi then travels to the door located southeast, leading to the Nautical Exhibit. He sees the room is foggy, so he uses the Poltergust 5000 to close the vent and vacuum all of the fog in. He can then capture the Strong Slammer (who is so joined by a Strong Greenie and a regular Greenie with a helmet). He then activates the E-Gate and uses the wheel located west to turn the E-Gate so it is located in the Study. He then travels back to the Inner Courtyard to turn the stairs to connect to the west side. He then enters the West Corridor and carefully avoids some Creepers. He uses the Dark-Light Device to reveal a hidden door located southwest, which leads to the Space Exhibit. He looks into the moving telescope to find the Strong Poltergeist and the book in an alternate version of the Space Exhibit. As Luigi looks out, however, he is transported into the area to battle the Strong Poltergeist.

The Strong Poltergeist throws stars at Luigi, but Luigi can detect where the Poltergeist is as the stars it is near will light up purple. After each time Luigi depletes a good chunk out of the Poltergeist's health, he will spin the asteroid rapidly and enter said asteroid. He will also throw out bombs and beetles. Once all of the Poltergeist's health has been depleted, Luigi is transported back to the Space Exhibit and reclaims the book.

Luigi in the Train Exhibit.

Luigi pulls the chain on the door of the rocket northwest and activates the E-Gate within. He carries the book back to the Study and back into the bookcase. In the Train Exhibit, he finds two Strong Hiders and a Strong Sneaker. Luigi successfully captures them and views the binoculars into the train model. As he finds Mario's painting, Luigi gets scared by a Boo. After E. Gadd calls, the mission is complete.

Upon returning back to the Bunker, E. Gadd tells Luigi that they will save Mario. E. Gadd also claims that his painting would be worth a lot at an art auction as a joke. He also claims that he is able to route the Pixelator into the miniature train model, although he says it is dangerous and has never personally tried it himself, but then says "fortune favors the bold!", and says to Luigi that he is not as young as he used to be.

Strategies and guides[]

  • Here are some useful tips to utilize when battling the Strong Poltergeist.
    • After he leaves the asteroid, try to flash and vacuum him as soon as possible.
    • When the Strong Poltergeist throws bombs, simply use the Blow function on the Poltergust 5000 if too near some.
    • If low on health, try flashing some of the beetles for extra health.
  • Before looking into the binoculars in the Train Exhibit and discovering Mario's painting which then ends the mission, grab the remaining Gems (as this mission opens the player to collect all the diamonds in the Treacherous Mansion (except the diamonds in the basement and the one in the Gargoyle Roof) and the mission's Boo. This is much simpler to do right after capturing the Strong Poltergeist.
  • In the Train Exhibit, try and capture the Strong Sneaker first and at least one Strong Hider. After that, Luigi can catch the other Strong Hider uninterrupted.

Mission Goals[]

Overall Goal[]

  • Use the makeshift rotor to activate the stairwell in the Inner Courtyard, then rush to the Train Exhibit and rescue Mario.

Other Goals[]

  • Activate the stairwell in the Inner Courtyard.
  • Get to the Train Exhibit and look for Mario!
  • Find the Poltergeist and the book he took!

Trivia[]

  • When inspecting the tridimensional secruity image, the Garage's background music from "Poltergust 5000" can be heard.
  • This mission follows the same structure as "Gear Up" and "The Pinwheel Gate," where Luigi has to get to a certain point within the area, only to find something valuable stolen by multiple ghosts or simply a much more powerful ghost, so Luigi has to track down the stolen object from the ghosts in order to progress forward. This is also the final mission to follow this structure.
  • This mission marks;
    • All of Luigi's voice clips when pressing the directions on the +Control Pad change into different variations of "Mario" permanently.
    • The first and only appearance of the Strong Poltergeist.
    • The first appearance of Creepers since "Showtime."
    • The last appearance of Gold Greenies.
    • The first time Mario's painting is fully revealed.
