Ambush Maneuver (known as Ambush Manoeuvre in PAL regions), or E-4, previously marked as E-Boss to trick the player, is the fourth mission in the Treacherous Mansion of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. After Luigi discovers Mario's painting in the miniature train model in the Train Exhibit, Luigi is sent in to what both he and E. Gadd think is the final battle against King Boo. However, the tables turn when their ambush is countered by Big Boo's own ambush.

This mission does not have any Gems to collect.
Mission Blurb[]
"Luigi, King Boo is in the Train Exhibit! Let's strike now, while we have the element of surprise! Get in there, defeat King Boo, and rescue Mario!"
Overview[]
Professor E. Gadd has finished routing the Pixelator to the tiny camera inside the miniature train model they saw in the Train Exhibit in the previous mission. E. Gadd says that the Parascope is still detecting the major paranormal signal, and believes that King Boo is still in there. E. Gadd tells Luigi to capture King Boo and rescue Mario before pixelating him inside the miniature train model.
Mission Goals[]
Overall Goal[]
- King Boo seems to be up to something inside the Train Exhibit. Ambush him while he's distracted.
- The miniature model in the Train Exhibit was a trick! Don't let Big Boo get the best of you.
Other Goals[]
- Ambush King Boo, and rescue Mario.
- Escape the trap.
Story[]
After Luigi is pixelated into the train model, the only thing he can do is to use the Dark-Light Device to reveal a hidden drill connected to the train. It then starts to move, and the drill pops all the balloons in front of it. After it passes by, a unnamed Boo appears, and calls forth several Boos. As Luigi gets out his flashlight, they fuse into one giant Boo (up to a total of 10 Boos) forming Big Boo. He says that while he's not the king, he is still big enough to crush Luigi. This makes Luigi realize the security image was staged by King Boo, and the battle between Luigi and Big Boo commences.
Big Boo has two main attacks. He can slam the ground up to three times or until he hits Luigi, and can go partially underground and charge at Luigi. The gimmick here is that Luigi needs to stun Big Boo without getting hit, and while stunned, Luigi can pull his tongue, and sending him flying onto the drill. Alternatively, Luigi can lure Big Boo into the giant drill by his charging attack. By choosing either method, this makes Big Boo split into 10 Boos. The train carts open, and Luigi needs to get each Boo into the carts by pulling their tongue and launching them in the carts. The Dark-Light Device should be used to reveal multiple hidden Boos. The Boos can also charge into Luigi with great speed. After a while, the Boos will fuse back into Big Boo, but with a smaller appearance after each Boo is in a cart. Once all 10 Boos have been trapped, the mission is complete. Luigi does a moonwalk before being pixelated back to the Bunker.
Back to the Bunker, E. Gadd states that he should have known King Boo would have staged the security image to lure Luigi there. However, E. Gadd also mentions that he made a quick tweak to the Pixelator and sent the trapped Boos into the Boo Canister. After E. Gadd mentions that he shouldn't have sold King Boo's painting at a garage sale, he and Luigi continue their search for King Boo, Mario and the final Dark Moon piece.
Tips and Tricks[]
- There is a third way to pop Big Boo: At the beginning of the fight, flash Big Boo and head over to the southeast corner of the track. Since Big Boo spawns directly behind Luigi, standing in the right spot facing away from the track will cause Big Boo to spawn on top of the track, and then popped by the train.
- It is possible to trap all 10 Boos without them ever reforming into Big Boo.
- If a Boo is next to the train, Luigi can grab and let go the moment the Boo is facing the train without charging at all. This does have a very short range, however.
- If a Boo is further off, Luigi usually only needs a level 1 power surge to launch the Boo towards the train.
- The amount of precision required is much lower than it looks; only hitting a cart with an empty spot is needed to trap it, even if it hits the section of the cart with a Boo already inside.
- When the Boos start going invisible, instead of continuing to fling boos off, use the Dark-Light Device to restun several Boos at once before they scatter.

Trivia[]
- The music that plays during the boss fight appears to be a cover of the merry-go-round theme in Big Boo's Haunt in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS.
- Prior to completing the mission, it has the skull icon which is reserved for boss fights. After the mission is completed though, the icon changes to E-4.
- This is the only level with 0 ghosts.
