“I call it the Dark-Light Device. It's a nifty little doodad able to break illusions, such as objects that have been turned invisible.”
Professor E. Gadd, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon

The Dark-Light Device (also simply known as Dark-Light or sometimes stylized as Dark Light) is an item in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon and Luigi's Mansion 3.

Obtainment[]

In Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, the Dark-Light Device is found in "Visual Tricks," in the Gloomy Manor's Lab, however Luigi must access it through the Parlor as the door to the Lab disappears. He must then fight several Greenies to get back the device they stole, and finally be able to use the Dark-Light Device. It is used by holding the "Y" button.

In Luigi's Mansion 3, after discovering E. Gadd trapped in a painting, Polterpup leads Luigi to the Storage Room located on the 2F - Mezzanine where he opens a safe to find the Dark-Light Device. It's used by hold the "X" button (or alternatively both the "L" and "R" buttons together).

Functions[]

It's used for uncovering hidden furniture, doors, invisible ghosts, Boos in both games, as well as their trails, hidden arrows, footprints, silhouettes, and other various items. It can also be used on paintings to obtain the item in the frame, or free someone who is trapped in it.

Whenever there is a hidden item found, a transparent, white silhouette of the item will become more and more visible as colorful rings fly around it. After shining the Dark-Light at it for enough time, several Spirit Balls will pop out of the item, usually the bigger the item, the more Spirit Balls. Luigi must then suck up these Spirit Balls to make the item become tangible and usable again. Should Luigi fail to suck up the Spirit Balls within the time they are present, the Spirit Balls will go back into the item they were in, and more Spirit Balls will be created in the place of the ones Luigi caught.

When finding a Boo, Luigi must use the Dark-Light Device to uncover where the Boo has gone, and eventually, uncover the Boo itself. The Boo will continuously make items in the room invisible, so the Dark-Light Device comes in handy in that regard as well. Shining the Dark Light on the Boo will stop it in its tracks before revealing itself and stunning them, allowing them to be captured.

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon[]

By pressing and holding "Y" button on the Nintendo 3DS, Luigi will be able to use the Dark-Light Device. However, if "Y" is held for too long, it will slightly burn, but it won't lose health.

There are also several missions where Luigi must track down the Polterpup, using the Dark-Light Device to uncover its footprints. He then must follow the trail of footprints, solving puzzles and capturing ghosts along the way, until he reaches the Polterpup.

In ScareScraper, the object will immediately become visible again instead.

Luigi's Mansion 3[]

The Dark-Light Device gains a few new uses, in addition to the fact that it no longer has limited use and can be used indefinitely without overheating and cooling down.

It is used to see where Polterkitty has jumped through walls, as she leaves a silhouette imprint on the wall or ground. This also applies to the Polterpup too in that regard. In addition, it's also used to reveal purple Spirit Balls that are possessing furniture once they're stunned. Luigi must capture these Spirit Balls in time, before they have a chance to re-enter the object they were just controlling.

In ScareScraper, hidden objects revealed by the Dark-Light Device will release Spirit Balls that need to be captured quickly, unlike how it was in Dark Moon.
