"Good Night!" is the Game Over term in Luigi's Mansion, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon and Luigi's Mansion 3. When Luigi takes a lot of damage until his HP reaches zero, he will end up fainting and lying down on the ground shivering frightfully like as if he lost all bravery and/or sleeping and the term will then appear. Right after, the game will be taken back to the title screen.
Luigi's Mansion[]
In the first game, the player's score will be reset back to the last saved one. There will be also a specific music once the "Good Night!" screen appears.
Beta version[]
The beta game over screen shows Luigi, now depressed in the front of the mansion with lightning strikes, however, the "Good Night!" term does not appear. Instead of life, the HP can also represent the courage and strength that Luigi has left, this would explain the Game Over of the Beta version, representing that he's lost all hope on finding his brother.
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon[]
When a Good Night! occurs in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, Luigi can be revived if he has any Gold Bones on his person, which causes Polterpup to eat the bone, jostling Luigi's body. Otherwise, the player needs to restart or return to the Bunker.
Luigi's Mansion (3DS)[]
In Luigi's Mansion (3DS), the Gold Bone is added like in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, but the game over is the same as in the original game.
Luigi's Mansion 3[]
Like in the other games, the player is also going to get a Good Night! when Luigi loses all 99 HP, causing him to drop his Flashlight, put his hands together, to the side of his head, and fall on his side, as if he were sleeping.
If the player doesn't have any Gold Bones with them, King Boo will trap Luigi in a painting. It will then show Luigi trapped in a frame along with his big brother Mario, Professor E. Gadd, Princess Peach, and the Toads. King Boo looks at the paintings and turns to the player laughing evilly, happy that his plan succeeded. Then it ends with "Good Night!" appearing in the black background.
There is also a special cutscene at the beginning of the game when King Boo hits Luigi with his tongue while running away from him, which is considered by some like an early bad ending. This scene will show how King Boo creates an empty frame with his crown that he uses to trap Luigi as he screams in horror. The Game Over and Good Night! screen will then be shown.
Trivia[]
- Strangely enough, Luigi's eyes are still opened and he can still blink when he lies on the floor in Luigi's Mansion. This is because his character model probably isn't programmed to close his eyes upon death.
- People have found the "beta ending" screen scary, or even too creepy, for a Nintendo game, which may be part of why it was removed. However, it was confirmed years ago that it was a promotional cutscene shown in Spaceworld 2000, an event Nintendo attended to showcase the GameCube, to get people to buy the game and never was an "ending" to begin with. Interestingly, the jingle used in the cutscene is also used in the beta theme for the game but at a higher pitch.
- The term is also used in the Nintendo Land minigame, Luigi's Ghost Mansion, when the ghost player wins against the human players.
