“Guests! Welcome to The Last Resort! My name is Hellen Gravely, and I am the owner of this hotel.”
— Hellen Gravely, as she welcomes Luigi and his friends at the beginning of the game.

Hellen Gravely is the owner of The Last Resort hotel and the secondary antagonist of Luigi's Mansion 3, delighted to work under King Boo's command, free once again thanks to her help, to carry out his evil plan.

She drives the plot of Luigi's Mansion 3 as owner of the hotel that serves as the game’s spooky setting.

Physical description[]

Hellen Gravely appears very fixated on maintaining appearances. This vanity leads her to powder her face incredibly often. Under the powder, however, lies a less refined and youthful visage. When outraged, the ghost's eyes gape and her face takes on a wrinkled and gaunt appearance. Her hair, which is typically styled in an imposing bun, becomes heavy and tangled.

Personality[]

Hellen's personality is a bit hard to discern. She is depicted as a woman of class, concealing her true appearance under a layer of make-up.

Hellen keeps an entire floor for herself dedicated to King Boo, this one being the Master Suite. This shows that she idolizes him and wants his respect, explaining the reason why she tries to help him in his evil plans.

In Luigi's Mansion 3[]

A ghost who idolizes King Boo, Hellen Gravely freed him from his painting after his most recent defeat by Luigi. Hellen wanted to help him get revenge on Luigi, Mario, and co. She threw her plan into motion by sending Luigi a letter promising a stay at the The Last Resort, Hellen's own hotel, telling him to invite any friends and family. Naturally, Luigi fell for the ruse and called Mario, Princess Peach, and three Toads to come with him to the Last Resort. Gravely, some Goobs, Steward, and Chambrea all disguised themselves so Luigi and his friends didn’t recognize the trap. E. Gadd was also invited (apparently, Hellen wrote him, boasting about the hotel’s massive ghost collection).

After sunset, Hellen and King Boo put their plan into action. They captured Mario, Peach, and the three Toads, and when Luigi investigated their disappearance, he was greeted by both at the RIP Suites. As King Boo was ready to trap Luigi in painting, Gravely stood by to watch the frightful plumber’s demise. Rather than try to fight back, Luigi instead ran away and escaped to a laundry room via a chute, leaving King Boo and Hellen frustrated.

To halt Luigi’s progress, Hellen scattered the elevator buttons throughout the hotel. She also sent her precious pet Polterkitty to stop Luigi from restoring the elevator, but failed both times, with the second time resulting in Luigi capturing the Polterkitty. This infuriated the scheming hotel owner. King Boo, fed up with Hellen’s incompetence, took both Mario's and Peach's paintings, putting the Mario painting in the Main Observation Room where Hellen resided, and the Peach painting at the roof. When Luigi finally got to the Master Suite, Hellen sent him a recording to intimidate him, hoping to stop the unlikely hero and regain King Boo's trust. As Luigi continued exploring the Master Suites, securing the four keys needed to access Hellen's chamber. Throughout his exploration of Hellen’s chambers, he discovered numerous items that Gravely had fashioned in King Boo's likeness. (Including gems)

Luigi eventually reached the Main Observation Room, where Gravely awaited him. She angrily scolded the plumber for running away like a coward and not accepting his fate, saying that had he just let himself get trapped in his painting, King Boo would have "showered her with praise" for the success of her plan. Instead, she lost everything: her staff, her precious Polterkitty, and the very little respect King Boo had for her. She got so furious that she unintentionally revealed her disheveled, true form, causing her to reapply her makeup. She fought Luigi in battle, but thanks to Luigi's gooey counterpart, Gooigi, she was defeated and captured, where she was reunited with her Polterkitty. Upon her defeat, Luigi was able to rescue Mario, and the two brothers made their way to the roof to rescue Peach.

Boss Fight[]

The boss fight starts off with Hellen hiding off-screen, only being seen via her monitors. Eventually, she will set off a spinning laser trap that can be dodged by Luigi using his burst. In the arena are two grates that Gooigi can phase through. Below the main battle, the floor is four colored switches that Gooigi can hit or pull to disable the corresponding laser on the main battle arena.

Hellen is immune to the flashlight up until she attempts to whack Luigi with her mirror. If Hellen misses her attack, her mirror will get stuck in the floor and is attempting to get it free. During that time she is vulnerable to light, thus giving Luigi an attempt for an attack on the evil hotel owner.

Between each phase, Gravely will lose her makeup and she will reapply every time she is on her monitors.

During the fight, Hellen can reactivate the colored lasers in the arena, and also release water on the level below, dissolving Gooigi if it touches him.

Aftermath[]

After King Boo's subsequent defeat, he was put in a container right next to Hellen, who fawned over him.

Abilities and Equipment[]

  • Manipulation: Hellen Gravely is shown to be able to manipulation and control things.
  • Superhuman Strength: Hellen Gravely is shown to be very strong, as she is able to smash her whole desk to pieces.
  • Mirror: Hellen Gravely has a mirror that she uses to reflect the light of the Strobulb back to Luigi. Hellen Gravely also uses it as an attack, dealing 20 HP of damage to Luigi if successful.
  • Water Pipe: Hellen Gravely has access to a water pipe, which she uses to dissolve Gooigi.

Trivia[]

  • According to E. Gadd in the F.A.Q. section of the guide, the type of makeup Gravely uses is something from a brand called "GheistPaint".
  • In her bedroom, players can see a broken mirror. It can be inferred that Hellen once looked into the mirror in her ugly form and smashed it in anger.
  • Portrayed on the cleavage of her dress is a small cut that looks like the gems from the Grand Lobby.
  • When capturing Hellen Gravely, her animation is similar to that of the Poltergeist from Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon.
  • Hellen's general appearance and character bears a slight resemblance to the Bride of Frankenstein, from the 1935 film of the same name. Both have an incredibly similar hairstyle, and wear a similarly fitting sleeveless dress. Both women are also set up to be infatuated with someone who is portrayed as a monster, in the namesake: King Boo and Frankenstein's Monster. They are also both in a media that has a common gothic theme and general spookiness. Whether this was an intentional reference or basic inspiration is unclear, but the similarities do stand.
