Hit Rock Bottom, or D-2, is the second mission in the Secret Mine of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. During the mission, Luigi must investigate the very bottom of the mine, and discover what it is the Boos are doing with the crystals seen in the snapshot the Toad brought back. He is also introduced to E-Gates in this mission.

Story[]
E. Gadd has finished processing the image given by the Blue Toad. When he and Luigi take a look, they can see ghosts such as a Greenie, a Slammer and a Sneaker trapped in red crystals. If the player zooms in on the Sneaker and Slammer trapped in the crystals, E. Gadd mentions that the Toad said that the crystals have strengthening qualities. Zooming onto the King Boo shadow, E. Gadd says if the shadow looks familiar, but states that he just imaging things. Zooming onto the Boo pushing a mine cart, E. Gadd states that the Boos are running amok like the Toad said. Zooming onto the Boo holding a crystal, E. Gadd says he doesn't like the idea of Boos needing crystals. Finally, zooming up onto the Boos carrying a sack with a painting inside, E. Gadd says that the villain behind all this really cares about the painting.
Once finished, E. Gadd states that he didn't like what is saw, and questions who is commanding the Boos to put the ghosts into crystals. E. Gadd mentions the odd laughter coming from the bottom of the mine, but states that the only way to prove it is to examine the Crystal Quarry.

Luigi discovers E-Gates for the first time.
After Luigi is piexlated into the Chalet, he needs to take the lift back down into the Airway, and cross the bridge and go into the Crossroads. In there, Luigi encounters E-Gates, so he needs to activate it with his Stroubulb, and they turn out to be teleporters. After Luigi waves hello to himself via the E-Gates, he goes through it, and he needs to use the Poltergust 5000 to carry a key encased in ice through the E-Gate, then melt the ice with the torch. Then, Luigi can open the locked door that leads to the Skip Slope. When Luigi slides down, there is a key to the right. If Luigi passes by the key, or any collectibles have been missed, Luigi can activate the E-Gate at the bottom of the slide, and be teleported back to the top. Once the key has been collected, Luigi can unlock the door into the Smuggler's Hideout. Luigi needs to carry a log and set it on fire to melt the fire blocking the door into the Shaft, but the window opens and Luigi is attacked by a Sneaker and two Greenies (one with a green paranormal shield). However, they aren't necessary to capture, Luigi just needs to close the window and continue to melt the ice, and access the Shaft. As Luigi rides it down, he can see a Greenie, two Slammers and a Gold Greenie with red crystals (only the Gold Greenie can bring captured). Once he reaches the bottom, Luigi needs to turn the handle to access the Coward's Chasm. Luigi needs to walk past the mirror and into the Deep Hall. If Luigi looks into the hole showing the Cinder Mine, he can see a Gold Greenie taunting him and a key encased in ice, but as he looks out, a Sneaker appears and trips him up, and the Sneaker and Gold Greenie high-five each other. Otherwise, Luigi needs to head into the Pit Mine and ride the lift down. He needs to pull a rope to get the escalators moving. Then, he needs to spin the rotor to release up to three rocks of coal. Then he needs to re-enter the Pit Mine and set one of the coals on fire, and melt the chain encased in ice. After pulling both chains, Luigi can enter the Cinder Mine. He needs to get the meter up to full, making a pipe release a flame. Then, Luigi needs to get the log, set it on fire and melt the ice leading to two sacks of coal. Open one and set it on fire with either the burning log or the flame and melt the ice containing the key. As Luigi leaves however, the Deep Hall is infested with two Greenies, (one with a crystal and the other one with a wielding mask). Once captured, Luigi can access the Crystal Quarry.

The trapped ghosts transform into their stronger variants.
Luigi sees the Boos mocking the trapped ghosts, then they notice Luigi, and taunt him before flying off, leaving the scared plumber to deal with the now-strengthed ghosts. If Luigi peers into one of the crystals, the trapped ghost in it will scare Luigi and break out, and after it is captured, the other two ghosts break out. The Strong Greenie will also equip itself with a pickaxe. Once all three have been captured, the mission is complete.
Strategies and tips[]
- In the Crystal Quarry, because when one ghost is captured, the other two ghosts break out, it is recommended to peer into the crystal with the Strong Sneaker, which is located on the left-hand side. That way, Luigi only needs to deal with the Strong Slammer and Strong Greenie afterwards.
Description[]
"According to the Toad assistant, ghosts - Boos especially - have been very active in the mine. Perhaps the security-camera photo will tell us what they're up to."
