They're not gonna eat the man. But what became of him, hm? Odd that he hasn't come back. Common theory holds that Boos grow in strength when they travel in numbers. They must somehow combine their powers too... Their power likely overwhelmed your brother. If your aim is to save Mario, there's but one way to do it: capture each Boo and slowly weaken the group's power! But Boos, as their name implies, like to hide and then jump out to scare people. You've got your work cut out finding 'em... Heh heh heh. Don't get all down in the mouth, my boy! That Game Boy Horror I gave you has a secret function! I knew it'd come in handy one day, so I developed it secretly. I call it the Boo Radar! The Boo Radar will flash red when something round like a Boo is hidden nearby. Boos are undead ghost enemies who appear in all three games in the Luigi's Mansion series with a big role.

During the first events, Luigi releases 50 Boos (excluding King Boo) from the storage room. He must then catch each one throughout the game. 35 of the fifty regular Boos are named and each one always starts out in a particular room (the other 15 form together to make Boolossus). Once Luigi uncovers a Boo, he must drain all of its HP with the Poltergust 3000 to capture it. Boos are capable of fleeing to other rooms, forcing Luigi to chase them down. Some Boos will tackle Luigi when threatened, while others will not. Luigi can still take damage from touching them on contact, however.

The following chart shows each Boo, its amount of HP, whether or not it has the ability to attack, the room it starts out in, and the different hiding places in that room.

While capturing all 50 Boos are not required to complete the game, a minimum requirement is needed to progress to the end of the game. Luigi needs to catch at least 5 Boos, where Professor E. Gadd will tell him to splash his face with water in the Washroom (1F) to feel better. This is where Luigi will find a key dropped in the toilet by Toad to the Fortune-Teller's Room. Luigi will need to capture at least 20 Boos by Area 3 in order to progress to the Balcony (3F) to face Boolossus, otherwise the combined remaining Boo powers will have Luigi blasted back to the Foyer. Finally, at least 45 Boos need to be captured before facing King Boo as he will do the same thing with the remaining Boos and blast Luigi back to the Foyer. However, collecting all 50 Boos will unlock a Gold Diamond.

Abilities

Hiding: Boos can hide in various objects.

Invisibility: When not attacking, Boos can become invisible.

Attack (not available to all Boos): Boos can spin into Luigi, dealing damage if successful.

Speed: Boos can be very fast.

Boo Ball Creation: Boos can create Boo Balls, which the Game Boy Horror can sense.

Bomb Creation: Boos can create Bombs that deal 20 damage if they explode with Luigi in the area of effect. The Game Boy Horror can sense these bombs.

Boolossus: If a certain number of boos are together, they can fuse to become Boolossus.

Trivia

• All Boos' names are clues or puns.
• It is ironic that King Boo and his 50 Boos run away when Luigi first encounters them in Storage Room due to their fear of the Poltergust 3000. They could have easily overpowered Luigi regardless as they do so if Luigi does not capture enough Boos to progress in the mansion to face Boolossus or King Boo.
  • King Boo also claimed he was not afraid of the poltergust and uses his Bowser suit to battle Luigi despite being without his minions.
