- Strangely, Mario's items are all equipped (excluding the Star and Letter) in the painting. They could be spare items.
- All of Mario's items are found in red chests expect for the Hat, the Letter, and the Star.
- In the Hidden Mansion from Luigi's Mansion 3DS, the objects change places other than Mario's Star.
- Mario's Star is likely the Power Star from Super Mario 64.
Theory[]
- Despite these 5 items being dropped, Mario is seen in the painting fully equipped with his hat, glove and shoe. This likely means Mario brought spares when coming to the mansion to celebrate and stay the night.
- Mario wrote the letter to Luigi to warn him of Boos and hid it somewhere familiar, hence the birdhouse as it matches their mailbox at home.
- Mario left his hat in the washing machine to wash as Luigi comments how Mario would launder it while Luigi would hand wash it. Mario likely also left behind his spare glove and shoe when encountered by Boos. The Boos then hid his glove and shoe in chests to be guarded by ghosts.
- Mario's star was sealed and hidden in the observatory by Mario himself before his capture.
