The Manual of Style is one of the style guides that aims to make Luigi's Mansion Wiki more easy to read, write, and understand the source. If a user decides to edit or add new pages, they must have an idea of the style of the wiki, so that the article has a similar format to the other pages, making them look more professional. We encourage all users, new or experienced, to refer to the Manual of Style and other policies at some point when editing at the wiki.
Please note that this is not a mandatory requirement, this simply serves as a useful guideline towards contributing to our articles, so you won't need to follow the requirements to 100%, just achieve to the best of your ability. Thank you for editing at the Mansionpedia!
Article names
- All article names should always be in singular, not plural form. An example would be Greenie instead of Greenies. This is made so when adding a link to this page in another article, the editor can refer to only one of them adding Greenie or also refer to more than a single one adding Greenies.
- The topics of each articles about individual treasures or Ghosts should be the name by which the treasure is most commonly known in their corresponding species.
- Most letters should be capitalized unless not in-game. For example, Boo-at-Arms only has the first "a" as lowercase in-game, but 12F - The Spectral Catch has all the words capitalized.
- All articles should start with an infobox of the proper type. For example, a game should have the game infobox, and a ghost should have the Ghost infoboxes, depending on what game they appear in. For Luigi's Mansion Portrait Ghosts, use Portrait-infobox.
- There should always be a short one-or-two summary of the desired subject at the top. The subject from the page itself when first mentioned should be bolded. It is recommended to make it the first or second word/phrase in the entire article. for example, in the beginning of the article Luigi: Luigi is the younger twin brother of Mario.
- When mentioning a game in an article, always use italics. As there is more than one game, if the article in question is part of one or some of these games, it is preferable to mention the game they belong to at the beginning of the article, for example: The Last Resort is the main setting of Luigi's Mansion 3.
- If the page is about a game, the first mention of it in the article should be both in bolds and italics and the rest only in italics as in the other pages: Luigi's Mansion is the first game in the franchise.
- If an article is extremely small, it is recommended to group it with other articles as a couple of sub-sections to create a bigger more thorough article.
- The games of Luigi's Mansion utilize American and British English titles. The wiki prefers to use American English spellings, with the British English names serving as redirects, as well as included in the opening paragraph. Examples include;
- Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, also known as Luigi's Mansion 2 in Europe and Australia.
- Poltergeists, also known as Boffins in the British English releases.
- Footbrawl, also known as American Footbrawl in the British English releases.
Article perspective
In every wiki, including the Luigi's Mansion Wiki, have rules about article perspectives.
- Mainspace articles must be written in the third person perspective. When adding guides, you can add second person perspective. Only use first person when using quotes. Examples include;
- Third person: Professor Elvin Gadd claims he left his new invention, the Poltergust 5000, in the Gloomy Manor's Garage.
- Second person: To remove the yellow chain on the Gondola in the Secret Mine, head to the Basin, where you will find the Strong Gobber controlling the yellow chains. Before capturing it, you will need to capture three Hiders first. When vacuuming the Strong Gobber, you should have Luigi move away from the incoming goo, whilst unleashing Power Surges on the Gobber.
- Using "you" terms is only permitted under strategies and guides sections.
Text
- Long bodies of text should be divided into paragraphs. In the case of very long bodies of text, consider dividing the content and arranging it under a number of subheadings.
- Language should be gender-neutral unless referring to a character or person.
- This wiki language is English, so all articles should be written in English except when referring to names in other languages or the mentioning of original sources in Japanese.
Links
- Don't use incorrect or improper links. As an example, if you want or are linking to Luigi's Mansion, then use Luigi's Mansion, not LM. In other words, never use abbreviations for links.
- Try to use only links when the subject in question is mentioned for the first time on the page or in the headings of it if the article have a lot of text. Each time an article is mentioned on the page, you do not have to link to every single one of them. For example, Gold Ghost may be mentioned five times. You only have to link to Gold Ghost once. You can link to articles more than once if the page is very wide.
- Try to keep a balance of links, but generally have the most links at the top and the least at the bottom.
- Use efficient link formats, including to plurals. For example, do Coins instead of Coins.
- Do not use links that go to the same page you are editing, this will break the link created, as the user is already reading in that article, making it also pointless if it did work.
- When including links in an article, there is no need to use capitalization or underscores, since the software produces them automatically.
Sections and headings
Markup
Always use two equal signs (==) style markup for headings. Also, start with ==, add the heading title, then end with ==.
This section's heading was created with the markup:
Sections and headings
This subsection's heading was created with the markup:
Markup
Wording
In a heading, capitalize the first letter of the first word along with proper nouns, and leave all of the other letters in lowercase. Remember to keeheadings short.
Images
- Main article: Luigi's Mansion Wiki:Media Policy
If this is a title image, it is recommended to put it inside an infobox. Right-alignment is preferred to left- or center-alignment. If there are too many images in a given article, consider making a gallery with a main heading. Galleries can be enlarged with the source editor by adding "widths=(size, 200 recommended)" inside the <gallery>segment. Use captions to explain the relevance of the image to the article. Make large images a thumb. Specifying the size of a thumb image is not recommended.
Uploading images
- Please name your files descriptively to avoid confusion. Uploading an image with the name "0239235jgjgkdgdf" will be deleted or renamed.
- Do not upload images we already have. If you plan on uploading an image, look around the wiki images first to see if it has already been uploaded by someone else.
Captions
Complete sentences in captions should always end in a period. If the caption is not a complete sentence, it generally should not have a period at the end. Captions should also not be italicized.
Lists
Numbered lists can be used for listing steps in a process. It is more common to use Bolded lists if order is not required. Trivia sections always consist of a bolded list.
- Bolded list item
- Bolded list item
- First list item
- Second list item
Creating new pages
When you create a new page, try to make sure that it is completely original. This applies to templates and categories as well. Think of:
- Is this needed?
- Do I have permission?
- Please consult a bureaucrat/admin if you are not sure whether this is something that does not require permission(e.g. if this is an extremely wanted page or so). Any bit of doubt means you should consult one.
- Has it not been done before?
Once you have done that and checked all 3 as "yes", go ahead and create the page. Add these things when you create the page:
- Construction or stub notice
- Infobox(If possible)
- Basic description
- Navbox(If possible)
- 3 categories(The more the merrier, 2 if you cannot think of a 3rd)
- Game it is located in
- Type of article(Item, boss, character, etc.)
- Extra category
