Paranormal Chaos, or E-5, is the fifth mission of the Treacherous Mansion, and probably the most difficult mission in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. It functions much like the other ghost-infestation missions where Luigi must capture a large amount of ghosts in a certain period of time. But here, instead of a timer, there is a time limit, and soon if the ghosts remain in the mansion for too long and become too powerful to be stopped, the dimension will collapse upon itself, causing a Game Over, regardless if you have a Gold bone or not.

Mission description[]
"I'm getting strange paranormal readings on the Terrace. We'd better send you in to inspect the place."
Story[]
E. Gadd says to Luigi that after he defeated Big Boo, the Parascope detected a radical new signal, a Paranormal Portal on the Terrace. He wagers that King Boo, Mario's painting and the final Dark Moon piece is beyond that portal. Before pixelating Luigi, he says that entering a paranormal portal is extremely dangerous, but doesn't have a choice.

Tons of Strong Ghosts exiting the portal.
Luigi is pixelated in the Inner Courtyard, and heads to the Terrace. Upon entering, he sees King Boo use the power of his crown to shoot a lighting bolt on the golden altar, creating the paranormal portal. King Boo laughs to himself as he backflips into the portal. Before Luigi can enter it, tons of Strong Ghosts exit the portal and invade the Treacherous Mansion. E. Gadd calls to say that the paranormal levels have "shot through the roof", and that the portal will have to wait, as if the paranormal levels are not reduced in time, their dimension will collapse upon itself.
As Luigi starts this ghost-hunting gauntlet, rooms infested with ghosts are marked in green, but as time passes, they will change to yellow, and then red. Luigi can also view the paranormal levels for each room on the Touch Screen, with green being the lowest and red being the highest. And if any rooms remain red for too long, or if a rooms' paranormal levels are completely filled, Luigi will have three minutes to stabilize the rooms or else it is Game Over. After clearing the rooms within the mansion, Luigi needs to head back to the Terrace to take on the final wave of ghosts. Below are a list of ghosts in each room. Note that the number of ghosts in some of the infested rooms will increase if the rooms have been left for too long.

After capturing every ghost, E. Gadd calls and remarks Luigi as a ghost-catching artist, and that the Poltergust 5000 is his paintbrush, and then tells him to come back to the Bunker to unload all the powerful ghosts before entering the portal.
Upon returning to unload all of the powerful ghosts, E. Gadd says that King Boo must have "flipped out", when Luigi defeated Big Boo, and sent a horde ghosts to stop him. However, E. Gadd also says that King Boo showed the way to get to him; by the portal, but they must hurry before it is closed.
Strategies and guides[]
- If there are any collectibles, (specifically gems and the mission's Boo) left to be found within the Treacherous Mansion, collect those before heading to the Terrace.
- Because Luigi cannot leave an infested room until it is cleared, tackle rooms that are red first, followed by yellow, then green.
- It is highly recommended that the player has the Super Poltergust upgrade unlocked before tackling this mission.
- Tackle the infested rooms in the order provided in the table above.
- Try to vacuum multiple ghosts at once.
- It is highly essential to use the E-Gates provided for faster transport.
- Here are some useful tips to utilize in some of the infested rooms.
- In the Ancient Exhibit, lure each Mummy to the nearest torch, then quickly catch both Strong Greenies. Then, stand in the center part far from the Strong Greenies creating sandstorms whilst charging up the Strobulb, then unleash the light as the Strong Greenies finish and capture them at once.
- In the Ice Age Exhibit, use the snow to trail where invisible Strong Sneakers are. As usual, make sure to capture multiple at once. When more appear, flash them as soon as possible.
- In the Dark Age Exhibit, de-equip the Strong Greenies of their weaponry before capturing them.
- In the Kitchen, it's best to capture one Strong Hider at a time. Whilst vacuuming one up, carefully jump whilst avoiding oranges and banana peels thrown by the Hiders.
- Upon reaching the Terrace, lure Mummies to the torches, try to capture Strong Sneakers as soon as possible, and when the Strong Gobber appears, capture the other ghosts first to make the Gobber's capture much easier.
Mission Goals[]
Overall Goal[]
- Reach the Terrace, and discover the source of the strong paranormal signal.
- King Boo has sent a horde of ghosts to start a paranormal riot. Capture all of the ghosts before they become too powerful to be stopped!
Other Goals[]
- Inspect the Terrace.
- Capture all the ghosts, before it's too late!
Trivia[]
- This mission has the most ghosts that are able to be captured in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, (excluding Tree Topping and Showtime as an infinite amount of ghosts can be captured in those levels) and Luigi can capture as little as 43 ghosts, to a maximum of 54 ghosts.
- There is a glitch that can be performed where if Luigi enters a room that will be infested with ghosts, and stays in the room for some time, then exits, that room will not be infested with ghosts. This is best done with the Dark Age Exhibit and Kitchen, therefore, minimum amount of ghosts that can be captured is 43.
- Paranormal Chaos acts similar to the bonus missions, though with several differences.
- As mentioned above, in the bonus missions, Luigi has to capture the ghosts as fast as possible, meaning that he can take his time. Though in Paranormal Chaos, Luigi has to capture the ghosts before time runs out.
- In Paranormal Chaos, the ghost infestation starts after reaching a certain point, whereas in the bonus missions, the ghost infestation starts immediately.
- All of the rooms in Paranormal Chaos are dark, whereas in the bonus missions, only the rooms with ghosts in are dark.
- Paranormal Chaos has 9 infested rooms, whereas the bonus missions only have six infested rooms. Also, after Luigi clears the ghosts in the Space and Nautical Exhibits and begins tackling the rooms on the first floor, more rooms get infested with ghosts, whereas in the bonus missions, Luigi has to clear all the waves of ghosts before more rooms can be infested.
- Unlike the bonus missions, the ghosts in the rooms in Paranormal Chaos are always the same, with some slight alterations.
- For unknown reasons, when Luigi goes up to the Terrace, the dark room music begins to play, despite being no ghosts at all in the mansion until the portal is created and almost all the ghosts of Evershade Valley have been unleashed. After Luigi collects the Boo, the light room music will play again, even going up downstairs, then back upstairs. Or, Luigi can head to the Entrance.
- After completing the ghost gauntlet, E. Gadd indirectly refers to his Magic Paintbrush which first appeared in Super Mario Sunshine while he remarks Luigi as a ghost-catching artist.
- The Blackout from Luigi's Mansion is similar to "Paranormal Chaos", as both include a multitude of ghosts appearing in already cleared rooms, all of the rooms are completely dark, and both events occur after defeating Boos combined into one larger Boo (Boolossus in the first game, Big Boo in the second).
Errors[]
- For unknown reasons, after clearing out most of the ghosts in the Ancient Exhibit and the Restrooms, E. Gadd's message warning Luigi about the paranormal activity rising to the limit will appear, as well as the 3 minutes timer, regardless if none of the rooms have been marked red for a considerable amount of time.
