"Criminy! They've got paranormal shields now?! Resourceful little rascals! Luigi, the Poltergust 5000 should be able to make short work of their shields. Once you catch a ghost in your vortex, wait for the meter to charge, and then press A. The Power surge should be enough to disable their shields. Look lively!"—E. Gadd, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
A Paranormal shield is an object that grants ghosts an HP of ∞ in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, until it gets shattered by a Power Surge from Luigi's Poltergust 5000. The paranormal shield can be a different color in different areas, which indicates the level of the Power surge that is at least required to shatter it. For example, if ghosts use green paranormal shields, Luigi needs to fill the meter to at least a Green Power Surge to be able to break the shield.
They act as a way to make ghosts more powerful without completely reworking their characteristics and moveset. They are a one-time shield against Luigi's Power Surge. It is not explained how the ghosts got access to paranormal shields.
Dark Moon Quest[]
Old Clockworks[]
In the Dark Moon Quest, paranormal shields are introduced in mission Play Catch, first utilized by three Greenies. The ones in the Warehouse will use blue/green paranormal shields, whilst the one in the Finishing Room utilizes a paranormal shield of any color.
In Piece at Last, two Greenies utilize paranormal shields once more. In the Synchronization Room, one uses a blue/green shield, whilst the other uses a shield for any color. During the mini-boss fight against the Strong Sneaker in the Gear Chamber, one Greenie uses a blue/green shield, while the other two use a shield of any color.
Secret Mine[]
In Hit Rock Bottom, one of the Greenies found in the Smuggler's Hideout uses a blue/green shield.
In Across the Chasm, one of the Greenies assisting the paranormal chained Strong Slammer uses a shield of any color.
Treacherous Mansion[]
In Paranormal Chaos, many Strong Greenies use paranormal shields. This is the only misssion in this mansion where they are used and the last time they are used in the Dark Moon Quest.
ScareScraper[]
In ScareScraper, only the Beetle Whisperer and its variations of them use the paranormal shields of any color. However, in Hard ScareScrapers, Greenies and Slammers can use paranormal shields. In Expert ScareScrapers, Slammers cannot use paranormal shields, in favor of Strong Greenies. In Expert Rush ScareScrapers, Sneakers are capable of utilizing paranormal shields.

Trivia[]
- Before vacuuming ghosts with paranormal shields, if Luigi waits for a bit and begins vacuuming them during the small frame before they are no longer stunned, the shield around the ghost will disappear, although it temporarily appears if the charge from the meter isn't powerful enough to destroy the shield (which doesn't happen with blue shields). Once the correct charge is pulled, the sound effects that plays when a paranormal shield is shattered does not play.
- In the ScareScraper, specifically Online Play, blue paranormal shields utilized by ghosts may sometimes incorrectly turn silver.
- If you never upgrade the Poltergust 5000, the ghost's shields will never scale above the blue variants.
