The Pixelator (or Pixelshifter in the PAL version) is an system invented by Professor E. Gadd. It's mainly used for teleportation in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, but it later appears in Luigi's Mansion (3DS), Professor E. Gadd's Research Journal and Luigi's Mansion 3.
Appearance[]
The Pixelator is used through different devices throughout the Luigi's Mansion franchise. The most common device seen in the second game is a security camera with a red base and green lens. E. Gadd's bunker is filled with screens and cameras which he uses to teleport Luigi. Upon completing a mission, a Pixelator in the form of a large screen which also has a red base and green screen will appear behind Luigi, showing the stats of the mission. Prototype Pixelator screens also appear and are similar to other Pixelators, however these ones have a red lever protruding out from them.
In Luigi's Mansion 3, the Pixelator appears as a small portable television which can be enlarged to allow Luigi to walk through it.
Function[]
The Pixelator acts as a teleportation device which Luigi and his allies use. The Pixelator can apparently be used through any camera or screen, shown at the start of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon when E. Gadd was able to teleport Luigi through the latter's television. When someone and/or something is being teleported by the Pixelator, they will be broken down into square bits and pulled into the device. Once the bits reach the end of the passage, they will be reformed into whatever object or person initially entered it.
This invention of the Professor records and collects videos during Luigi's adventures, allowing E. Gadd to watch his progress or keep an eye to the state of the Evershade Valley at any time from the safety of his bunker.
The Pixelator is also capable of capturing biological data of those who use it for transportation, which is what helped E. Gadd giving Goo a shape similar to Luigi, creating Gooigi thanks to the Pixelator.
E. Gadd also modified the Pixelator during his research in Professor E. Gadd's Research Journal to enable it to connect to the past, making the Pixelator capable of being used to communicate with people from the past and transport others not only to a location, but also through time, as he does with Gooigi in the events of Luigi's Mansion (3DS).
In Luigi's Mansion 3, Luigi carries with him a small portable version of the Pixelator when exploring The Last Resort. The device offers Luigi a quick way back to E. Gadd's bunker simply by walking through the screen after it is enlarged. However, Luigi can only leave the lab the same way he entered, through the Pixelator, and returns to the area where he used the device.
History[]
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon[]
In the opening cutscene, E. Gadd uses Luigi's television to teleport the hero to his bunker and explain the situation to Luigi. E. Gadd will always use the Pixelator to transport Luigi at the start of a mission and at the end of one.
Upon capturing the Tough Possessor in Stop the Knightmare, E. Gadd will once again teleport Luigi to the Bunker, however, this time, King Boo will intercept it by bringing Luigi's pixels into his illusion. The Dark Moon piece which Luigi held manages to teleport to the Bunker, though. After Luigi defeats King Boo, E. Gadd will teleport himself along with the Toads and the Dark Moon pieces.
Professor E. Gadd's Research Journal / Luigi's Mansion (3DS)[]
After seeing that the Goo he discovered and studied during his research could learn to master the Poltergust for him, E. Gadd decided to give it a humanoid form for it. Unfortunately, even with the mold created to create the shape, the Goo returned to its original form after some time, and It seemed Goo was not able to easily hold a shape without help.
He then remembered the biological data that the Pixelator captured when Luigi used it. Taking that data and converting it into an electrical signal, he was able to then input it into Goo. This helped the Goo shapeshifted into an exceedingly green copy of Luigi, later known as Gooigi.
To give Gooigi capabilities beyond those of a normal person, E. Gadd decided to collect ghost energy from beyond Evershade Valley, specifically from the first mansion in Luigi's Mansion. The problem with this plan is that the mansion vanished some time ago, so it would be impossible for Gooigi to just walk there and collect ghosts.
Using his genius and invention skills, E. Gadd then worked on a modification of the Pixelator to enable it to connect to the past, making it possible to contact his past self and Luigi, asking them to help out with this task and sending Gooigi to them.
Luigi's Mansion 3[]
The Pixelator can be used as a fast travel mechanic to the bunker. This can be used inside one of the options of the pause menu.

Trivia[]
- There is a possibility that during the transportation cutscene in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, one white pixel will be seen really close to the screen, making it look bigger in size than normal.
- King Boo is capable of controlling the Pixelator and make the person using it transport to a location of his own choice, changing the initial intended arrival point of the traveler to his own volition.
- The passage which a person and/or object goes through when using the Pixelator is normally green, However, when King Boo took control of it, the passage turned purple.
