ScareScraper (known as Thrill Tower in European and Australian versions of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon) is the multiplayer mode that debuts in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon and its Nintendo Switch port. It later returned in Luigi's Mansion 3. The mansion's name is a portmanteau of "scare" and "skyscraper".
In Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon / Luigi's Mansion 2 HD[]
The ScareScraper is unlocked once the player completes the mission "Visual Tricks" in the Dark Moon Quest. The mode can be played locally or online, for up to four players. Each Luigi is also a different color; P1 is Green, P2, is Blue, P3 is Orange and P4 is Pink. These four colors are based on Luigi's alternate skins in Super Smash Bros. They will also have different colored Poltergust 5000s to match their respective color scheme.
When starting up a ScareScraper mode, there are three difficulties to choose from; Normal, Hard and Expert. The host can also select the amount of floors to play on; 5, 10 or 25 floors. After completing a ScareScraper mode on 25 floors, the Endless mode gets unlocked for that mode. After successfully completing a floor in time, the Luigis will participate in a Red Coin Scramble, where they will have to grab all four Red Coins within 20 seconds.
If all Red Coins are collected in time, after the collected cash is cached in, a roulette will spin with a Poltergust x2 or x3 upgrade, a map, the Restorator and Dark-Light Goggles, and will go towards a random Luigi, in which they will use that power-up for the next floor. The more Red Coins a Luigi collects, the higher chance they have of receiving the power-up. However, even if one Luigi receives a map, the whole map for the next floor will be displayed for all the other players.
Objectives/Modes[]
Hunter Mode[]
Hunter Mode is where the player or a team try to defeat all the ghosts on each floor in 5 minutes or less, if the team catches all the ghosts, the player's team will have a chance to roll a reward to be given to one of the players. On higher difficulties, stronger ghosts can be encountered too. Afterwards, the player's team will advance to the next floor.
Rush Mode[]
Rush Mode is where Luigi must "Find the exit before time runs out!". To get more time, the team must catch ghosts or search furniture for clocks that will give them more time.
Polterpup Mode[]
Polterpup Mode is where the player or the player's team use the Dark-Light Device to track down Polterpups and their kennel, but then they escape and the player/ or the player's team need to find them still using the Dark-Light-Device to track down their paws and then find them hiding in the furniture, when the player catch all the Polterpups in 5 minutes or less the player go on to the next floor.
Surprise Modes[]
Surprise Mode is where all of the other 3 mini-games are played in the following way: Two Hunter Mode floors and one Rush Mode and Polterpup Mode floors, all played in a randomized order.
Items and upgrades[]
After successfully completing a Red Coin Scramble, one of the Luigis may receive an item or a Poltergust booster. Reaching a certain amount of gold will also reward the Luigis will a Poltergust or Dark-Light Device upgrade.
Boss Ghosts[]
- Main article: ScareScraper Ghosts#In Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
On every floor that is a multiple of five, the Luigis will fight a ScareScraper-exclusive boss ghost. There are five main types to encounter; they also have many different types of each ghost to fit 8 espective themes. On the top floor, the Luigis will fight The Brain. In total, there are 40 different rare ghosts to capture, excluding The Brain and the standard gold ghosts.
Communication[]
Players can make the Luigis communicate with each other via the +D-Pad.
- Pressing up will say "Hey!"
- Pressing left will say "Good job!"
- Pressing right will say "Thank you very much!"
- Pressing down will say "Help, help!"
Also, players can tap on the Touch Screen anywhere on the map to place a marker for where they want the teammates to go, whilst saying "Over here!"
Traps[]
During the course of the ScareScraper, there are several traps to be mindful of. Some of these traps will only appear with 2 or more players.
- Rugs - Some of the rugs will have stitched holes in the middle. If a Luigi walks over it, they will get stuck in the rug. They'll also be attacked by Greenies, so another Luigi will have to pull on one of the tugs to free that trapped Luigi.
- Vases - Some of the blue vases will trap a Luigi inside of it, and will be attacked by Greenies and Slammers. Another Luigi will have to pull on the chain to break it. Alternatively, any animated suit of armor in the room can break the vase with its sword. However, that Luigi will still take 20 damage. There's a way to check if a blue vase is a trap or not. If the vase shakes via the Vaccum function on the Poltergust 5000, then it is a normal vase; but if it doesn't, it's a trap and must not be examined to avoid being trapped.
- Curse - Sometimes, searching through certain furniture will unleash a toxic gas, which will infect the Luigi and become cursed. This results in a few major effects.
- All equipped power-ups are immediately dropped, and can be stolen from non-cursed Luigis.
- All of the player's controls are reversed. So for example, to capture a ghost, the player must use the Circle Pad as if you were letting the ghosts pull you to vacuum them up.
- To remove the curse, another Luigi must shine the Dark-Light Device on the infected Luigi for approximately 3 seconds. Alternatively, the group can just end the floor.
- Gobbers - Only in Rush mode, in certain dark rooms which seemingly have no ghosts in them, Gobbers may drop from the ceiling and cover a certain door in goo, preventing the Luigis from using that door. That door may be necessary for the Red Coin Scramble, or it could be leading towards the hatch. The Gobber must be defeated in order for the door to become usuable again. This usually happens when a Luigi is the last to leave the room.

The colors of the four Luigis remain the same, though now only their hats and undershirt is recolored, and they goo container on the Poltergust G-00 is recolored to match. Also, P3 and P4 switch color schemes, so P3 is the pink Luigi, whilst P4 is orange Luigi.
With the inclusion of Gooigi, it's now possible to play ScareScraper for up to 8 players, with the Gooigi matching the color scheme of that recolored Luigi. P1 has a green Gooigi, P2 has a blue Gooigi, P3 has a pinkish-magenta Gooigi, and P4 has a yellowish-orange Gooigi.
Prior to the 2020 updates, the ScareScraper can be played through 5 or 10 floors. After the 2020 updates, 20 floors can be played. There is also a "Random" feature in which players will play through a random number of floors.
Objectives[]
Capture the Ghosts[]
The team must explore the floor for ghosts to defeat. The objective is the all the ghosts before time runs out. Goobs, Hammers, Oozers, and Slinkers appear along with special versions of them depending on if the floor has a Costume via DLC packs. There are also special versions of the ghosts behind secret doors on a costume floor.
Rescue the Toads[]
There are four Toads located in random rooms with ghosts in them. The objective is to find them and bring the back to the pixelator screen located in the spawn area before time runs out. In order to bring them to the pixelator screen, all the ghosts in the room must be defeated. If a Slinker is in the room it may try to capture the toad and teleport it to a different room. If one does happen to pick up a Toad, the burst can be used to let it go or one can start the exhaust function.
Defeat the Crows[]
This one is like the capture the ghosts mission but with crows instead of ghosts. The crows can easily be defeat by using the Strobulb feature of the Poltergust G-00. Ghosts can still be found on these floors, but they are not required to be captured.
Collect the Money[]
Depending on how many players there are the amount of money the team has to collect either 4500, 6000, 7500, or 10000G. Luigi can collect money by either interacting with objects that have money inside, using the Dark-Light Device on money paintings, or by defeating Golden Goobs that are hiding in boxes or furniture.
Capture the Ghosts (Rare)[]
If the selected mode is 10 or 20 floors, this mission will appear every 5 floors (excluding the last floor). The player and his teammates must look for a key to get inside the locked door. Once the door has been unlocked any players must stand on the panel in the middle of the room with Gooigi. Doing this will open a door with Rare Ghosts inside. Defeat these ghosts before time runs out to win, but be careful as Rare Ghosts have special abilities that normal ones don't have.
Defeat the Boss[]
In this objective players have to defeat Boolossus before time runs out. The fight is pretty similar to the King Boo fight from story mode, but after being blown up by bombs Boolossus will separate into normal Boos that the team has to defeat.
Items[]
There are useful items hidden throughout the ScareScraper that can be found in treasure chest and hidden rooms.
- Suction Upgrade - The suction upgrade will make it so Luigi can use the Slam function immediately. It will also make it do twice as much damage.
- Strobulb Upgrade - The strobulb upgrade make a fully charged strobulb light up the entire room. This is useful for stunning all ghosts are defeating all crows at once.
- Dark-Light Glasses - The dark-light glasses allow Luigi to see hidden object and invisible ghosts without having to use the Dark-Light Device.
- Trap Siren - The trap siren will start flashing and making sound when Luigi is near a fake carpet, wardrobe, or door.
Traps[]
There are several traps players need to be careful of while playing the ScareScraper too.
- Fake Carpet Trap- If one steps in the fake carpet, the carpet will roll up and keep Luigi in it for until another player sets him free, while also dealing 10 damage. If no one comes, it will let him go after a while. Fake Carpets appear as separate sections of carpet.
- Fake Door Trap - If a fake door is opened, it will slam Luigi between it and the wall it is attached to until another player sets him free, while also dealing 10 damage. If no one comes, it will let him go after a while. Fake Doors lack both a doormat and lights beside it.
- Fake Wardrobe Trap - If a fake wardrobe is opened, it will grab Luigi and trap him inside it until another player sets him free, dealing 10 damage. If no one comes, it will let him go after a while. Fake Wardrobes have a representation of King Boo's face on it.
- Possessed Garbage Bin - If a possessed bin is walked too close to, it will come to life and attack any players who come near it. It can be defeated by by using the Plunger Shot to flip it over and followed by the Dark-Light Device. Luigis that are near it but not activated will appear nervous.
- Blackout - Sometime during the game the lights and the player's map may randomly turn off. The map will turn back on after a few seconds, but the lights will stay off until someone turns them back on using the breaker switch. This is preluded by a Boo's laughter. This event cannot happen if the Poltergust G-00 Trap event has already taken place.
- Poltergust G-00 Trap - Sometime during the game all the players' Poltergusts may teleport to a random room. The player will have to find and collect their poltergust to continue using it. Passing over someone else's poltergust will not give it to the player, and they cannot use Gooigi for the time even if he is controlled by a different player. This is preluded by a Boo's laughter. This event cannot happen if a Blackout has already taken place.
