A Spider is a minor enemy that appears in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon and Luigi's Mansion 3. They make their appearance from the start of both games.
History[]
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon[]
Spiders play major roles in the missions "Sticky Situation" and "Confront the Source".
In Sticky Situation, Spiders take over the Gloomy Manor and cover it in webs. Luigi can only clear these webs by sucking up a cocoon-like ball attached to the webs and then leading it to a flame. This will cause both it and the web to catch on fire.
In Confront the Source, Luigi must go to the bottom part of the Gloomy Manor, which is a basement filled with spiders and webs. Here he will be confronted with the Spider Queen, a giant spider possessed by the Grouchy Possessor. Unlike other spiders, the Queen has the ability to shoot globs of purple liquid poison at Luigi. During the fight, Luigi will participate in a three-part boss-fight that involves burning the webs, much like how he did in the Sticky Situation mission. Each time the boss is knocked out by fire, the Possessor will appear and Luigi will have to suck it and slowly peel back it's layers. Each time he does, the boss will retreat back into the spider and break the wall, making it harder for Luigi to set the Spider's web on fire. Once the Possessor is defeated, the Queen Spider will shrink to about the size of Luigi, her eyes will turn from green to white, and she will retreat into a hole in the wall. After she does, a swarm of other spiders will join her.
Luigi's Mansion 3[]
Spiders make a return in Luigi's Mansion 3. They received a major visual upgrade, this time looking more like black-widow spiders. Spiders do not have a major role as enemies in this game, often appearing secret and/or unkempt areas. During Director Morty's boss segment, a fake giant spider is one of his movie sets. Having to burn it's web might be a reference to the Queen Spider boss from the second game.
There is also a room full of spiders in a secret room behind the fifth floor laundry room. Removing all of them—as well as their webs—will earn Luigi an achievement.
Strategies and guides[]
Spiders are usually seen traveling in packs of 2 to 5, and are not that much of a threat to Luigi. However; they will cause him still cause him to lose 5 HP if he steps on one by mistake. They appear moderately in various situations, such as walking on the ceiling or in random webs across the mansions To defeat a Spider, the player needs to use the Poltergust 5000 or Poltergust G-00 to suck them up, or they can use their Strobulb on the Spider and there is a chance it could drop a Coin. Whenever a spider is nearby, they are usually accompanied by webs, which can also be sucked up.
Variations[]
Gold Spiders[]
A Gold Spider is much more rare than a normal Spider, and is usually found after checking furniture. Gold Spiders travel in packs of 2 to 3, and they only appears on the screen for a few seconds before vanishing, so the player has to react fast. If the player manage to use their Strobulb on a Gold Spider, it will drop Gold Bars.
Trivia[]
- The spider upsurge was most likely caused when the Grouchy Possessor possessed the leader spider. This can be proven because when the Possessor is defeated, the main spider along with an upsurge of smaller ones can be seen retreating into the stone wall of the Cellar.
- Unlike the Bats and Mice, Spiders did not appear as ghosts in the first game.
