The strengthened ghosts are a special type of ghosts that make their debut in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. Their type is first seen briefly during the events "Piece at Last" (Strong Sneaker only), and then in every subsequent normal mission from "Hit Rock Bottom" onwards. They are normal ghosts that have been augmented by a special red crystal excavated in the Secret Mine that can increase their strength.
Dark Moon Quest[]
Old Clockworks[]
The first strengthened ghost is seen in the Old Clockworks, in "Piece at Last," with that being the Strong Sneaker. It has the rotor in its possession, trying to hide it from Luigi. After Luigi frees the yellow Toad and goes back to the Gear Chamber, the Strong Sneaker calls forth several hordes of Greenies in a mini-boss fight.
Secret Mine[]
In "Hit Rock Bottom," it is revealed how the Sneaker back in the Old Clockworks was strengthened and had cracks on its body; Boos have been using crystals from the mine to further strengthen ghosts, starting with a Slammer, a Greenie and another Sneaker.
In "Across the Chasm," it is revealed a Gobber has been strengthened by the crystals too, and this one, along with a Strong Slammer and a Strong Greenie are covered in paranormal chains, and block the Gondola and flee to different rooms, forcing Luigi to defeat them to break their chains.
Treacherous Mansion[]
In the Treacherous Mansion, several strengthened ghosts swarm the mansion. In "Front-Door Key," Hiders have been strengthened to Strong Hiders.
In "A Train to Catch," the mission reveals a Poltergeist has been strengthened to a Strong Poltergeist. It steals the yellow book from the Study and flees to the Space Exhibit.
In "Paranormal Chaos," hordes of strengthened ghosts invade the mansion, and Luigi must capture every single ghost, or else his dimension will collapse upon itself.
ScareScraper[]
Strengthened ghosts can be encountered in the ScareScraper. Strong Slammers, Strong Gobbers, Strong Sneakers and Strong Hiders can only appear on Endless and Expert ScareScrapers, while Strong Greenies appear in all difficulties, but will never appear on regular floors on Normal ScareScrapers. Also, Strong Gobbers never appear in Rush ScareScrapers, regardless of the difficulty, most likely due to their health and the time limit.
In Luigi's Mansion Arcade[]
Strengthened ghosts return in Luigi's Mansion Arcade. They make their debut in the Old Clockworks, just like in Dark Moon. However, multiple variants appear in the clock tower, instead of the Strong Sneaker. Also, only Strong Greenies, Strong Slammers and Strong Hiders return from Dark Moon. Strong Greenies have 15 HP, Strong Slammers have 35 HP and Strong Hiders have 25 HP.
Old Clockworks[]
When Luigi explores the clock tower, E. Gadd thinks that a strong signal is affecting the other ghosts. This turns out to be the case, as several ghosts have been strengthened, fighting alongside regular ghosts.
Treacherous Mansion[]
Hordes of strong ghosts accompany regular ghosts, as well as ScareScraper-exclusive bosses in invading the Treacherous Mansion. Strong Greenies and Strong Slammers also accompany King Boo in his battle.
Physical description[]
The strengthened ghosts are identical to their normal counterparts in terms of shape and size, but their bodies now have glowing cracked-like marks all over their bodies and the color of the cracks vary on what similar color the ghost is and the marks will be a lighter shade of their bodies. For example, Strong Greenies will have lime-green cracks all over their bodies. The marks may also alter the original colors of the ghosts for example, Strong Hiders have dark turquoise bodies instead of cobalt blue bodies.
Health[]
Due to being strengthened by the crystals, the strengthened ghosts also have much more HP. Strong Greenies have 50 HP as opposed to 10 HP, Strong Slammers have 150 HP as opposed to 30 HP, Strong Hiders have 75 HP as opposed to 15 HP, Strong Gobbers have 200 HP as opposed to 100 HP, Strong Sneakers have 100 HP as opposed to 25 HP, though some in a few missions may only have 50 HP. Finally, the Strong Poltergeist has 200 HP, as opposed to 50 HP.
Powers and abilities[]
The abilities used by each type of strengthened ghost are further enhanced, but are still the same of their regular counterparts. However, their movements are much faster and are able to recover slightly quicker from a Strobulb stun than their original versions.
Trivia[]
- Ghosts with infinite HP, such as Creepers and Possessors, are not strengthened.
- It is unknown what happened to these types of ghosts after the Dark Moon was restored, whether their marks disappeared, returning their strength back to normal, or if the marks and enhanced strength is a permanent process.
