The Treacherous Mansion is the last and likely longest mansion that Luigi visits during the events of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. It serves as a museum of all things across Evershade Valley, as well as being the location of the highest paranormal signals ever recorded. Four of the rooms on the first floor of the Treacherous Mansion are based on the previous mansions in the game.
Luigi will encounter every single normal ghost type he has ever encountered on his journey, such as Greenies, Slammers, Hiders, Gobbers, Creepers, Sneakers and Poltergeists, although a multitude of them being much stronger than before.
Later on, King Boo creates a paranormal portal on the Terrace to unleash a horde of powerful ghosts to invade the mansion. And to make matters worse, if not stopped quick enough, these ghosts would spell out the very destruction of the dimension.
Appearance[]
The Treacherous Mansion is a large abandoned museum built over a giant, water-filled ravine, hence the name, as the pathway to the property is very unstable. While it's technically a museum, the general architecture and appearance make it look more like a castle, and this is also hinted to by the dungeon styled basement. This mansion has a large emphasis on gothic horror, as its aesthetic includes gothic purple windows, sharp jagged spires and many stone gargoyles decorating the place. It's unknown why there are many coffins and gravestones in the underground areas. There is a giant tree growing out the rooftop, and a pirate ship awkwardly sticking outwards, both on the right side. A hot-air balloon is visible among the rooftop of the left side, and the far left corner of the mansion has it's exterior wall destroyed, yet this obtrusion is not visible whilst inside.
E. Gadd claims that the mansion belonged to it's curators until they either perished or disappeared. In the events of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, King Boo had taken up the Treacherous Mansion as his main base of operations, redecorating the place to his liking. Many of the exhibits found within the museum are contain artifacts found from Evershade Valley and beyond.
The four exhibits on the first floor are based of the four mansions from the game; the Dark Age Exhibit is based of the Gloomy Manor with its knights and medieval theme, the Jungle Exhibit is based of the Haunted Towers with is jungle theming, the Ancient Exhibit is based of the Old Clockworks due to its Ancient Egypt theme found within the ancient ruins, and the Ice Age Exhibit is based of the Secret Mine with its arctic themes.
There are also four exhibits found on the second floor with unique themings. The Space Exhibit includes an astral setting with planets, rockets, asteroids and a telescope, the Aviation Exhibit includes an aerial theme with models of hot air balloons and planes. The Nautical Exhibit includes pirate ships and sea life, and the Train Exhibit includes models of trains and the exhibit itself seems to be based off a train station.
Due to the rigid layout of the mansion, this area has the most E-Gates out of any others in the game, to aid with quick navigation. All the gates link to the Front Entrance, and connect to all the exhibit rooms.
Dark Moon Quest[]
Luigi first arrives at the Treacherous Mansion in search for the final Dark Moon piece. As he attempts to enter the museum, the Front-Door Key is stole by Polterpup, forcing Luigi to hunt down the mischievous canine through the basement levels.[1]
After capturing the Polterpup for a third and final time, Luigi enters the mansion and escorts green and purple Toads back to the Bunker.[2] Upon inspecting a security image brought by them, E. Gadd and Luigi finally discover that King Boo has escaped and has been plotting the crisis of Evershade Valley, and has trapped Mario in a painting.[3]
Luigi heads to the Train Exhibit in search for his kidnapped brother and to capture King Boo, but instead runs into and fights Big Boo.[4] After the defeat of Big Boo, an enraged King Boo unleashes a horde of ghosts via a paranormal portal in an effort to destroy Luigi's universe.[5] After reducing the paranormal activity, Luigi heads to the Paranormal Dimension to confront the Tough Possessor for the final Dark Moon piece.[6]
Once Luigi defeats King Boo, he frees Mario and restores the Dark Moon with the five Toads, returning the ghosts back to their friendly selves. A few Greenies, a Slammer, a Hider, the Grouchy Possessor and Polterpup join up and celebrate with Luigi and his friends, taking a group photo in the process on the Terrace.[7]
In Luigi's Mansion Arcade[]
The Treacherous Mansion in Luigi's Mansion Arcade.
The Treacherous Mansion appears as the third and final mansion in Luigi's Mansion Arcade. Just like its appearance in Dark Moon, this mansion contains the strongest paranormal signals, including almost every ghost that Luigi has faced in his journey, and most of these ghosts are strong, or equipped with a weapon of some form.
This mansion also contains all ScareScraper boss ghosts (excluding The Brain as he was fought in the Gloomy Manor, and the Terrible Teleporter and its variations, due to Sneakers not being present in said game). However, not all of the ScareScraper ghosts are encountered at once. The rooms that are visited are the West Corridor, East Corridor and the Terrace. Unlike the Gloomy Manor and Old Clockworks, there are no special objectives to complete, other than capture all of the ghosts, identical to "Paranormal Chaos". In contrast to this being the longest mansion in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, this is the shortest mansion within the game.
King Boo also serves as the boss for this mansion. After defeating him and his army of ghosts, Luigi happily unites with the Polterpup.

Trivia[]
- The exterior of the Treacherous Mansion is never consistent in all displays of it in game. While all of the mansions shown in cutscenes do not exactly match their actual layout due to technical and visual overlooks, the exterior, more precisely the roof of the Treacherous Mansion has two variations shown in different parts of the game. In all Evershade Valley cutscenes and as the main mini icon for the mansion, the middle of the roof is shown to be a massive observatory, with a telescope, to indicate the Space Exhibit. However, in the mini display for the icon in E. Gadd's lab and the actual mansion in game, the roof lacks this observatory and ops instead for the large spire-like outpost that hangs center over the mansion.
- The Treacherous Mansion is the only mansion in the game to;
- Have Luigi rescue two Toad assistants (green and purple).
- Have only one locked door, which is the front door. Every other door is already unlocked.
- Include every single normal ghost type in the game, as Gobbers, Creepers and Sneakers were not introduced until the Haunted Towers, and Poltergeists do not appear in said mansion, nor the Secret Mine, Gobbers do not appear in the Old Clockworks in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, and Creepers are also absent in the Secret Mine.
- Include two ghost-capturing missions, "Paranormal Chaos" and "Terrifying Invasion".
- Not have the respective Dark Moon piece and Possessor located anywhere within the mansion itself, but rather, through a separate area, the Paranormal Dimension.
- Most of the missions in the Treacherous Mansion follow a similar structure to some of the Gloomy Manor missions.
- The first missions, "Poltergust 5000" and "Front-Door Key" involve collecting key items (the Poltergust 5000, Strobulb, and Front-Door Key) whilst encountering a small amount of ghosts.
- The third missions, "Quiet Please!" and "A Train to Catch" have Luigi use a mechanism in a room (Foyer and Inner Courtyard) to access rooms on the second floor, and both feature Poltergeists as minibosses (3 normal Poltergeists in "Quiet Please!" and the Strong Poltergeist in "A Train to Catch").
- The fourth missions ("Visual Tricks" and "Ambush Maneuver") have Luigi fight mandatory Boos.
- After completing Ambush Maneuver, E. Gadd says the line, "Boos always spell trouble, especially when they gang up!", which he also said after completing Visual Tricks.
- The fifth missions ("Sticky Situation" and "Paranormal Chaos") have Luigi re-visit most of the mansion's rooms and areas to complete a mandatory task (clear all spider webs in the former, and capture the ghosts in the latter). The difference is, "Paranormal Chaos" requires all of the ghosts to be captured before time runs out. Also, multiple numbers of a single type of ghost will appear in rooms in both missions.
Cultural References[]
- The Treacherous Mansion appears to be based on William Hope Hodgson's 1908 novel The House on the Borderland, in which the denizens of the titular house are assaulted by creatures from another dimension. Similarly, the house in the novel gets a large portion of the ground below it spirited away, leaving the house stranded on a ledge directly above a large, water-filled ravine.
